Who We Are
The Hazel Dell church of Christ is a non-denominational church of Christ. We are a group of Christians that believe Jesus is the living Son of God (John 1:1-4) and also in the inerrancy of the Holy Scriptures (2 Tim 3:16). We do not look for instruction from any source outside of God's inspired Word. We do not abide by any council, creed or governing body's decisions.
We do look to Christ as the head of the Church (Col 1:18). Hazel Dell church of Christ is not the Church, we are members of Christ's Church (Eph 1:22-23) and as such we come together for worship, prayer, study and fellowship (Phil 2:2). We strive for love and unity in the Spirit as part of Christ's Church.
We have been added to the membership of Christ's church (Acts 2:47) by our obedience to His gospel (2 Thess 1:6-9). Having heard the word (Rom 10:17) we have believed (Heb 11:6). We have repented of our sins (Acts 2:38) and confessed that Christ is the living Son of God (Matt 10:32-33). We have been baptized for the forgiveness of our sins (Mark 16:16) and now live by faith (Rom 1:17), striving to keep Christ at the center of our lives.
The Hazel Dell Church of Christ follows the example of the early Church given in the Bible. We consider ourselves a New Testament Church. Elders (Titus 1:5) oversee the spiritual needs of the congregation. Deacons (1 Tim 3:12) oversee specific ministries within the congregation and work under the oversight of the Elders.
Our singing is to praise our God and edify the body as a whole (Eph 5:19). The preaching is for the purpose of both teaching and building up the body (Col 3:16) so we are in turn found prepared for sharing the gospel individually and as a group. We partake of the Lord's supper weekly as was the example of the early Church (1 Cor 11:23-29). By doing so we remember that Christ is the head of the Church and the sole hope we have of salvation (John 14:6); through the grace that was given in His sacrifice on the cross (Rom 3:23-29).
It is our desire to reach out with Christian love and the Gospel to reach the lost of this world (Matt 28:19-20). Our worship begins here on the first day of the week but continues in our lives throughout the week. Part of our worship is giving back to the Lord a portion of that with which we have been blessed (1 Cor 16:2). We are a self-supporting congregation and rely on the financial contributions of those who have placed their workmanship with this congregation for its work to continue.
All that we do as a congregation is ultimately aimed at bringing Christ to those whom desire salvation. As Christians we will then teach, encourage and challenge each other to growth and good works (Heb 10:24); reaching out to all who desire a saving relationship with Christ. This is the commission that He has given us (Matt 28:18-20). We welcome you and hope that you will see Christ within us and come to know the love of Christ through us.
Our History
In 1981 several families heard the calling from the Lord to start a Church in the Hazel Dell/Felida area of Vancouver. It wasn't long before the Hazel Dell Church of Christ had a place to meet. In the fall of 1981 they purchased a house with acreage that had a metal pole barn on it. They immediately began preparing this house for worship services. In November of 1981 they held their first worship service in the living room of that home.
Within the first year the membership was growing so much that the living room and dinning room of the house was becoming too small for them. So they began remodeling the daylight basement to hold services there.
During this same period of time they hired their first minister to come work with the new congregation. This minister worked with them for one year until he decided to go back to school and obtain his master's degree in Bible.
The Lord blessed the Church in Hazel Dell. He grew the Church and helped the congregation to find a new minister. This minister and his family came to work with the congregation for the next 17 years.
As the Church continued during the early years plans were begun to convert "the old barn" behind the house into a larger facility in which to worship. By the spring of 1986 the members of the congregation, along with the Lord's continued blessing, transformed the "barn" into an area where they could hold Bible classes and worship the Lord. Since the first transformation the barn has undergone one renovation, and another renovation is currently being considered.
In 2001 the current minister and his wife came to work with the Hazel Dell Church of Christ.
There are many exciting things planned for the future and we know that the Lord will continue to bless us. The story of Hazel Dell continues to unfold, would you like to be a part of it? If you are visiting the area or are resident of Clark County we ask that you drop on in and "Come and Grow" with us as we worship our Lord and Savior.
